Rick Steves Carry-on backpack review

As I was planning for a trip through Europe, finding the best traveling backpack has been among my foremost preparatory preoccupations. When I was going through all the different backpack reviews, Rick Steve’s Convertible Carry-on Backpack caught my attention. This excellently designed, practical and sturdy pack has also got style.

The very reason that a popular travel guide with his own TV show had his name on this thing qualified this product as suspect due to the rebel in me. After all, I refuse to read travel books and consider myself an “off the beaten path” kind of traveller. Nonetheless, Rick Steves seemed to have the backpack for me.

A Great Travel Companion Indeed

The idea of getting a specialized as a carry-on really appealed to me. There’s nothing to kill your travel buzz more than having to pay an extra fee or repack before boarding. (Find out Few Tips on How to Pack for Travelling) It’s not like I have a measuring tape with me at all times when I go shopping. Carry-on backpacks take the guess work out of the equation.

The fact that there are expandable zippers is awesome. I like having space adjustment options for different travel scenarios, so I was pleased to see that this backpack can also be a suitcase. At first, I was a little disappointed that there were not wheels included, but when I thought about it, who needs the extra weight?

Compartments to Keep You Organized

Sometimes when I was using this bag as a backpack, I remembered what it felt like to have a frame pack and how much more well balanced the weight is with those. I concluded, nonetheless, that because I wanted the best of both worlds, this was a sacrifice I was willing to make.

I am a compartment freak. I feel an inordinate sense of satisfaction when there are just the right places for my things. I love the 3 front pockets and the water bottle pocket that closes together with a toggle.

The side access compartments also really won me over. Not having to dig through helps me feel relaxed and in control of my possessions. I like having access in a jiffy if the need arises. I liked the extra mesh bags they included along with the security pouch. The side outer pockets are perfect for loose papers, receipts, and brochures.

Durable and Waterproof

Although actually I like the look and feel of natural fabrics best, a smart traveler has to think practically. Rick Steve’s Convertible Carry-On met my specifications for well constructed material that is water-proof, stain-resistant, and extra strong.

The quality of sewing is often the telltale sign of a mediocre vs. quality product. Along with the zippers being a little lacking, seams on this pack seemed to be an area for improvement. I had to send my first one back because the shoulder strap busted after a short time.

The good news is, they were pretty awesome about sending me a new one in a hurry. They had discovered, according to the customer service representative, that my bag had been in a series of bags that mistakes were made on involving human and machine errors.

No fault, no harm. I took my new backpack with me through Europe and it was among the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. It held up well, helped me avoid delays at the airport, and the adjustable shoulder and waist straps saved my back from getting sore. It came through solidly for me. I traveled for 4 months and I had no problems.
